24/7 Dementia care in Paramaribo, Suriname

Wiesje foundation developed in collaboration with KDV Architects and Henri Snel, tutor and the students from the Master Interior Architecture of the Sandberg Instituut a research on a 24/7 care centre in Paramaribo, Suriname. The housing concept consists of a care centre with 8 houses for every eight residents, switched around a common courtyard and veranda. Each cottage consists of eight single rooms, a communal lounge, kitchen, bathroom and guest bedroom. The guest room is also used for emergency shelter. By two houses there will be a laundry room. Central are some general areas included common activities (singing, dancing, games, celebrations), a medical department, civil engineering and business management. The living concept The residents should wherever possible be able to continue their usual life, with a few extras. Warm care, safety, security, and making music together, dancing in the square, on the porch telling stories, helping with housework, these are all things that gives quality of life. The aim is to strike a balance between the needs of the individual to retreat into a private room, participate in the normal circadian rhythm in a household of about 6 people and joint activities on the central square.
